east nor west: asians in monochrome

venue: asian civilisations museum

location: singapore

showtimes: still on

latest show at the asian civilisations museum. splendid display of artifacts and antiques. fine exhibits from the islamic, chinese and british colonial past. you find yourself transported back to the balmy tropical jungles of malaya, where indigenous peoples and immigrant races mix. haven't you heard of the travellers' tales your grandfathers told you? borneo jungle, with the tribal peoples and headhunters? maybe not headhunters, but certainly a good mix of relics from tribal worship, buddhist and hindhi traditions. in the islamic section, there is a good variety of ancient texts and calligraphic scrolls, scripts and other curios and antiques. as always, the antiques and artifex are not always of known origin to the uninitated. close your eyes if it frightens you or skip to the next section if it is not really in line with your religious beliefs. nevertheless, it is an interesting collection of our colonial past in malaya. Slide your ticket into one of the display stations and a VR avatar speaks to you. certainly worth the ticket price.
